My special connection to Coachella

1/30/2023

What’s up everyone?! Long time no post. Candidly, I started this blog as a class assignment, so I took my much-needed winter break away, but am back now to continue talking about the things I love, festivals and music!

ICYMI, the Coachella lineup finally came out this month! I wasn’t immediately blown away, but am definitely starting to get a bit more excited about it as I’m doing some digging and researching (shoutout to r/Coachella).

EDM Genre Guide - Pt. 1

12/8/2022

EDM has been quite the buzz word recently, but what does it really mean? Most people who are unfamiliar with the scene use it as if it were an individual genre, but not all EDM is the same. In fact, there are hundreds of different subgenres and sub-subgenres within the world of electronic music, for which EDM is just an umbrella term. While each subgenre might have a number of variations, there are still a few main genres to look at that cover the majority of the world of electronically produced music.

Festival Safety Pt. 1 - Hearing Safety

11/28/2022

As someone who goes to a lot of loud live events, hearing protection is an important thing to consider. While hearing loss with age is natural, hearing loss (even temporary) from one night out is definitely not! As a generation, we are being unkind to our ears; using headphones at high volume levels and spending long periods of time in loud environments are both major ways in which we will see greater hearing loss in shorter times than the generations before us.

This doesn’t mean that we should limit the number of events we attend (because how could we?), but it does mean that investing in certain protection devices is worthwhile. Let’s talk about some hearing loss facts, and how you can combat it!

How to: be grateful for past show experiences

11/24/2022

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone is spending today doing something nice with people you love.

I want to take this day as an opportunity to reflect back on some of the amazing shows I’ve had the pleasure to attend within the last few years! As I posted on Instagram this week, I keep a collection of all my past festival and event wristbands. I don’t look at them often, but just knowing I have them all is one way that I feel I can hold on to those memories! With that, I am going to briefly talk about some ways to preserve your show memories so you can always feel thankful for them.

Festival Culture Pt. 1 - PLUR <3

11/17/2022

On this first series post about festival culture, I’m digging in to the amazing values and community the rave world has to offer. PLUR is a term and set of principles that have been present in the rave scene since the early 90s. In case you’ve never heard of it, PLUR stands for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. Consider it the “raver manifesto”.

For my second festival guide, I’m going to talk about the various Insomniac festivals! In case you didn’t know, Insomniac is arguably the biggest event promoter in the electronic music industry. Under its umbrella, Insomniac also includes multiple genre-focused divisions like Bassrush (bass music), Basscon (hard dance), Dreamstate (trance), Audiotistic, and Factory 93, to only name a few. These festivals take place domestically and internationally. Separately, Insomniac also owns a growing-variety of clubs, including Exchange LA, Time Nightclub, Academy LA, Nova SD, among others.

How to: dress for success

11/9/2022

Just like any great event, there’s a “dress code” for festivals too. The kind of fashion you see might vary a little depending on the type of event you’re attending, but one thing you can usually count on seeing at any festival is “rave wear”. Sure, if you go to an all-out rave that’ll be the standard look, but I’ve seen plenty of ravers at events where there’s only a minority of electronic music acts. In other words, rave wear is enjoying its moment in the spotlight and is here to stay. Some looks are wild, all are fun and a few may not be for the faint of heart!
